Man allegedly hacks girlfriend to death

A man has appeared in the Benoni Magistrates Court on Monday, for allegedly murdering his girlfriend.

The 38-year-old accused was arrested days after he allegedly hacked the 38-year-old victim to death in Chief Albert Luthuli Park.

Crystal Park SAPS media liaison officer Tryna Maritz said police arrived at the murder scene on Sunday, to find the victim in a toilet.

“It was alleged that the victim was involved in a fight with her boyfriend the previous night,” said Maritz.

“The police found an axe with blood on the scene, but the boyfriend was nowhere to be found.”

WO James Ratale and Const Edwin Mdluhli followed up on information and traced the suspect to Olifantsfontein, where he was found and arrested.

Maritz said the accused confessed to the murder at his second appearance in court on Tuesday.

The suspect will remain in custody at Modderbee Prison until his next court appearance, on October 21.
