Vervet monkey run over in front of animal hospital
A vervet monkey was run over at the corner of Pretoria and Springs Roads, in Petit, this morning (November 7).
It happened right in front of Petit Animal Hospital who were informed of the incident by a member of the public.
Veterinarian Dr Petro Allison said they responded immediately, but could unfortunately not save the monkey.
She also contacted the Benoni SPCA and the Benoni Animal Rescue Centre (Barc).
Allison said they felt sad that they could not rescue it.
It is not known where the monkey, which was a male adult, came from.
Benoni SPCA inspector Renee Rossolimos said vervet monkeys are indigenous animals.
“You have to have a permit to own them and the same goes for all indigenous animals,” she said.
She said people often get baby monkeys and hand-raise them, but they are still wild animals.
The driver of the vehicle left the scene.
The animal hospital will cremate the monkey.
The City Times reported on another vervet monkey which was on the loose in Morehill in May.
