No arrest in connection with Northmead woman’s death

Police had, by Monday, still not made any arrests in connection with the death of Sonja Pretorius, whose body was found in the yard of a Northmead home, on November 6.

Benoni SAPS spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele said, on Monday, that police had questioned two people in connection with Pretorius’s death, but that they had been released.

Both were known to the victim.

“Two suspects were brought in for questioning and both were released, as there was not enough evidence to link them to the crime,” said Sekele.

According to a few sources, the 42-year-old victim was severely beaten.

Police found a lot of red fluid, which they believe to be blood, in the kitchen of the woman’s Sixth Avenue residence, as well as patches on the lawn and against the wall where the body lay.

The body was found face-down against the perimeter wall, near the washing line.

A neighbour spoke to the City Times on November 6, and said his partner phoned him on the morning of November 6, to notify him of the body on the grass.

The man was on his way to work when he received the call.

He rushed home and found the lifeless body of the woman against a wall, near the washing line, face down.

He immediately alerted emergency services.

The neighbour lives in a separate house on the same property as the victim.

The police are still awaiting the post-mortem, to determine the cause and time of death.

Sekele said police are still investigating the case of murder.

Pretorius’s partner was too emotional to discuss her death with the City Times on Monday.
