Man arrested attempting to sell illegal firearm in Benoni CBD

The Benoni SAPS arrested a man who was selling an unlicensed firearm in the CBD this afternoon (November 12).

Benoni police spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele said the suspect approached two men who were standing at the intersection of Tom Jones Street and Cranbourne Avenue.

He said he was selling a firearm — a Norinco pistol with live ammunition.

“The men told him that they wanted to see the gun and he produced it,” said Sekele.

One of them then said he wanted to feel if it was a real gun and the suspect handed it over.

“When the suspect handed it over, the men grabbed him and the firearm, pinned him to the ground and tied him up with his shoe lace before calling the police,” said Sekele.

He was charged with possession of illegal firearm and is expected to appear soon in the Benoni Magistrates Court.
