Boy (14) critical after near drowning has died

A 14-year-old boy who was rushed to hospital in a critical condition, following a near drowning incident at the Northern Areas pool, in Northmead, died on December 9.

The boy attended Tom Newby School and both the school and the Benoni police have confirmed that he died at the Tambo Memorial Hospital, in Boksburg.

He was admitted to hospital after a near drowning at the Northerns Sports Grounds public pool, on December 3.

Tom Newby School principal Giselle Mynhardt extended the school’s deepest sympathy to the family.

Mynhardt said school teachers and pupils will wear blue in memory of the boy this coming Friday.

Benoni police spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele said the police have opened an inquest docket.

The boy has not been named, due to the fact that we were unable to contact his family.

Netcare 911 media liaison officer, Santi Steinmann, said last week that paramedics arrived at the scene and found that the life guard on duty had pulled the lifeless boy out of the swimming pool and initiated CPR.

Paramedics continued tirelessly with resuscitation until his vital signs were recovered.

Exact detail surrounding the incident is still unclear at this stage.
