UPDATE: Police officer involved in Great North accident in stable condition
A 29-year-old police officer is in a stable condition in the Netcare Linmed Hospital this morning following an accident that claimed the life of two men in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The injured constable was a passenger in a police vehicle from Sebenza when it was involved in a collision on the corner of Great North Road and Mercury Street.
“The eyewitnesses allege that the driver of a private vehicle was driving at a high speed and failed to stop at a red traffic light,” said Mothutsane.
“He collided with a state vehicle with police members who were patrolling the area.
“Both drivers, the driver of the state motor vehicle and of the private car, were certified dead on the scene.”
Mothutsane said there were two police officers in the police van and one occupant in the civilian’s car.
Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.
The name of the deceased police officer should be released by the police today.
