Parolees and probationers give back to the community

The Benoni Community Correction Centre for parolees and probationers held a community outreach at Kingsway Secondary School, on February 26.

The aim of the outreach was to teach the community about the importance of forgiveness and how probationers and parolees are willing to change their lives by making a difference in their communities.

The centre organised for parolees and probationers from Kingsway/Lindelani to clean the school and repair 120 broken school desks on the day.

The parole board provides the school with four parolees to clean the premises every month.

Bielie van Wyk, unit manager of the Benoni Community Correction Centre, addressed the pupils and explained the difference between the parole and probation systems.

Parolee Collen Khumalo motivated the pupils of Kingsway about the effects and consequences of crime.

The school raised funds for the purchasing of wood for the desks by holding a civilian clothes day.

The school’s governing body also contributed.

“This outreach is a great initiative and I’m very happy with the outcome, as it gives a boost to the economic development of Kingsway,” said Linda Skhosana, principal of Kingsway Secondary School.
