Father receives counselling after daughter’s death

The father of Kady-Shay O'Bryan, the 29-year-old who died in a motor vehicle accident alongside Top Billing presenter Simba Mhere, has expressed his anguish following his daughter's death.

Gary O’Bryan, who has lived in Western Extension for the past 14 years and in Farrarmere two years before that, told the City Times he is now receiving group counselling to come to terms with his daughter’s death.

Kady-Shay, and Simba died in a motor vehicle accident, in Johannesburg, on January 31.

“I have started grief counselling with a wonderful group called the Compassionate Friends, who solely counsel the parents and siblings of lost children,” said O’Bryan.

“I believe it is a positive step and the support from the leaders and fellow members is invaluable in trying to come to terms with this.”

O’Bryan said he was stunned by the news of his daughter’s death.

“[I felt an] absolute sense of shock and overwhelming despair,” he explained.

“I have often been an uncontrollable pitiful heap of sadness and anguish.”

O’Bryan described Kady-Shay, who lived in Benoni in 2006, as a inspirational person.

“This can be seen by the hundreds of tributes on her Facebook page and other media,” he said.

“She and her good friend, Simba Mhere, with whom she was killed, used to be the shining lights at functions they attended, and were truly loved by a massive, broad spectrum of people.

“They were on their way to Cape Town, where they would have been a major part of the Top Billing production at the J&B Met horse race, on the day in question.

“Kady was not a member of the Top Billing team, but she was intending to wear a striking outfit, especially made for her, and it will now never be worn.”

O’Bryan said he and a group of friends, who have played in a social band, will record two songs (Knocking on Heavens Door and Stand by Me) to honour his daughter.

The videos will be uploaded to YouTube.
