Unusually big sunflowers sprout in Benoni
Moira Taylor is growing 3m tall sunflowers in her Putfontein garden.
Despite not being entirely sure of what is causing the plants’ exceptional growth, Taylor is sure about certain aspects contributing to it.
She has a parrot, one of many she used to own, and the sunflower seed leftovers from its feed is thrown outside for other birds to eat.
There are also geese on the property, along with a pond, which might play a role in the fruitful condition of the ground.
The tallest sunflower plant is approximately 3.40m high, with another a few centimetres short of 3m and one less than 2m tall.
Taylor suggested that perhaps God is blessing her for feeding the birds.
In December the City Times reported on another local resident, Lawrence Cohen, who is also growing sunflowers of extraordinary size in his garden.
Cohen attributed the growth of his flowers to bunny excrement, which he used as fertiliser.
