UPDATE: Man assaulted after attempted rape

A man was still in hospital on Monday, after community members assaulted him, because he allegedly tried to rape a nine-year-old girl.

Benoni SAPS spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele said the 29-year-old suspect was chased by the community after the incident in Kingsway, on August 30, at 2pm.

“According to the mother of the child, she was at home with her sister and their children when this man — who is known to them — came to visit with a beer bottle,” said Sekele.

The spokesperson said the sisters left the house, leaving the children with the suspect.

“When she came back, she saw the girl’s underwear hanging around her knees, and the suspect’s trousers were down,” said Sekele.

The mother of the victim chased the man out of the house.

He was chased by community members, who assaulted him with their fists.

He played dead and tried to run away when police arrived, but was later arrested.

Sekele said the child was not raped, but the nine-year-old claimed she was asked to perform a sexual act on him.

The victim told her mother the man allegedly penetrated her in June.

The man was admitted to the Far East Rand Hospital and will be charged with rape.
