Sewage leaks raise concerns

Sewage leaks have become a concern among Benoni residents lately, as numerous complaints about leaks have been reported.

Prominent places such as the Bullfrog Pan, Homestead Dam and a resident whose garden has been flooded regularly are some of the latest complaints.

These issues have been reported to the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM), with the municipality allegedly giving no feedback.

The sewage flowing into the Bullfrog Pan and posing a threat to the environment is being caused by sewage pump numbers one and three breaking down and not operating as they should.

According to Benoni resident Shelley Owen, the pumps belong to the municipality and the East Rand Water Care Company (Erwat) maintains them, to ensure they are working properly.

Owen mentioned that the problem has been occurring since 2013 and nothing has been done to resolve the matter.

She said pump number three has reportedly broken down six times in the last eight months, but is currently working.

Another leak that is suspected to be sewage is currently affecting Homestead Dam.

The leak apparently stems from a storm water drain on Mercury Street, in Farrarmere.

Dr Heather Pearson, from the Mercury Street Veterinary Hospital, said she has attempted to report this matter, but it has not been fixed.

”This has been an on-going problem since August, last year, and nothing has been done,” said Pearson.

Clr Mary Goby has been involved and has conducted petitions to rally the municipality into action.

She said she would arrange for water tests to be conducted, to determine if it is, indeed, sewage that is flowing into the dam.

She added that ailing infrastructure is to blame for many of the leaks.

Paul Kirchmann, a Farrarmere resident, said he has sent countless emails to Goby and the municipality about the manhole outside his property.

He has been given different reference numbers each time he has reported the issue.

The manhole was fixed on August 29, after month of waiting for a response.

The municipality was approached for comment, but no response was received at the time of going to print.
