False claims land woman in court

A woman was released on bail of R500 after she was arrested for opening a false criminal case on September 9.

The woman opened a case of armed robbery the day before her arrest, claiming she was robbed at gunpoint of her handbag and cellphone.

Lieut Nomsa Sekele, Benoni SAPS spokesperson, said the alleged victim claimed she was in her car on the rooftop at Lakeside Mall when she was approached by two people.

“She was approached by two women, one of whom was pregnant,” said Sekele.

“They complimented her on her hair when, suddenly, a man approached from the passenger side of the car, opened the door and pointed a firearm at her.”

Benoni SAPS detectives requested video footage from Lakeside Mall and saw that the woman had not been robbed as she had claimed.

A case of perjury was opened at the Benoni Police Station.

The suspect appeared in the Benoni Magistrates Court on September 10.

She is due to appear in court again soon.

Sekele said people will be arrested for opening false cases.

“If you open false cases we will investigate them and the truth will come out and you will face the full might of the law,” she added.

Lakeside Mall marketing manager Angela Pereira confirmed that the mall allowed police to view the CCTV footage.
