Dancers delight in Romania

Dancers from the Benoni-based Steps School of Dance, Robynne Versfeld, Taylor-Lee Versfeld, Kristen Levin and Tobi Alabi recently returned from Romania, having represented South Africa at the Dance World Cup finals.

There they achieved outstanding results, including three first places and two special awards.

The competition, which is hosted by a different country every year, sees more than 18 000 dancers from 38 countries competing to qualify for the finals, which were held in Bucharest.

South Africa was well represented, with a large team of dancers competing across all categories, from ballet and jazz to street dance, hip-hop and tap.

Multiple world champion Robynne Versfeld carried off the Best Overall Performer award, and her brother, Taylor-Lee, received the award for Best Tap Performer.

Robynne placed first in the senior jazz and show dance solo sections, and second in the senior tap solo section, which was won by Taylor-Lee.

Together with Kristen Levin, they also received the top prize in the senior tap duet/trio section.

Other places include Kristen Levin who came sixth in the junior tap solo and fifth in the junior tap duet/trio section; Tobi Alabi fourth children’s tap solo and 19th in children’s jazz and showdance.
