Bunny Park keeps volunteers busy over holidays

There was no rest for the Bunny Park animals or the volunteers who feed them over the festive season.

The Bunny Park Animals 911 Group went to the park on December 24 and 27 and has continued with regular feeding excursions every Sunday.

On Friday (January 8), Tania Forrest-Smith said that she had been going to the park daily, since Christmas, to continue cleaning and feeding at the facility.

The 911 group and park management recently organised special quarters for a pregnant goat, which 911 cleaned in preparation for her to give birth.

Forrest-Smith said the request for the “maternity ring” was made after the doe was found in the sun without food or water.

According to the 911 Facebook page, she was close to giving birth at the time of publishing.

On a darker note, due to the hail storms in Benoni over December, Forrest-Smith said, at least 100 bunnies had perished.

Themba Gadebe, Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality spokesperson, was asked for an update regarding the Bunny Park, but could not comment at the time of publishing, as some of the relevant department heads were still on leave.

When asked about the hail storms killing bunnies, he said he had not heard of it and would investigate the matter.

The 911 group still relies heavily on donations from the public and local businesses.
