EMPD come down on illegal advertisers

“Expensive repercussions” await people who are guilty of illegal advertising.

A joint operation between the EMPD, JMPD, TMPD and Mogale City by-laws units was undertaken in Benoni, Kempton Park and Boksburg on February 24.

“A total of 186 illegal posters and adverts were removed,” said EMPD spokesperson Lieut-Col Wilfred Kgasago.

“Mobile (trailer) adverts as well as motor dealers displaying vehicles beyond their premises were fined and given written warnings.”

He said transgressors will incur expensive fines.

The following are not allowed:

  • Businesses advertising on trailers – which are often parked at intersections – is not allowed whatsoever, unless the trailers are mobile.

Kgasago said these illegal advertisers were, on February 24, given seven days to remove the trailers.

Failure to do so will result in the item being impounded, after which a fine of R1 000 will have to be paid to release the trailer.

  • Signs on lampposts are not permitted, unless the municipality has granted permission.

In this event, all signs will need to display a round, green sticker as proof of their legality.

The EMPD confiscated illegal boards during the operation.

A R500 fine needs to be paid to release the items from a pound in Spartan.

  • Owners of motor vehicles parked on pavements will be slapped with a R500 fine.

“Motor dealers display vehicles on sidewalks and obstruct pedestrians who are compelled to encroach onto the roadway,” said Kgasago.

To report illegal advertising, contact Benoni EMPD precinct commander Lieut-Col Mokhele Matjiu on 011 999 7523 during office hours.

To apply for advertising permission, visit the Benoni Customer Care Centre on the corner of Tom Jones Street and Elston Avenue.
