No refuse removal in Benoni, because of boots

The municipal refuse removal workers have resorted to not working because they are unhappy with the quality of safety boots they were issued.

As a result there has been an interruption of services.

The municipality is currently working to resolve the matter speedily.

“We apologise to the residents for the inconvenience,” said Themba Gadebe, Ekurhuleni Metro Municipality spokesperson.

He said: “The backlog of rubbish will be collected by the weekend.”

Residents said on Facebook the following areas have been affected by the service interruption: Crystal Park, Farrarmere, Fairleads, Lakefield, Northmead, Rynfield and Western Extension.

Gadebe could not give a time frame for the arrival of new boots.

At the time of publishing Gadebe said the action by the workers was not a strike nor illegal, though he did not elaborate further.
