Woman spoils youth on her birthday

“When children come to the bakery and ask for bread crumbs, I was inspired to give back to the community.”

These are the words of Thembi Moloto, owner of Bake ’n Mo Bakery in Daveyton.

Every year, Moloto chooses one school from Daveyton or Etwatwa and donates school shoes to the needy.

This year, she decided to do things differently.

“On March 27, it was my birthday and I decided to spend the day with needy children, instead of throwing a party with friends and family members,” she said.

On April 8, Moloto got to celebrate her 50th birthday with 50 children from 25 schools in Daveyton.

The celebration was held at Rosemary Dabula Care for the Aged, in Daveyton, and each pupil received a pair of shoes, a jersey and socks.

Moloto said she started donating shoes to pupils in 2013.

“Having a business in an urban area has humbled me,” she said.

“When these school kids come to the bakery and ask for bread crumbs, you can tell that they are really in need.

“Instead of giving them crumbs, we give them bread and tea.”

Moloto said for some of them the bread and tea is their only meal for the day.

“I was touched to the point that I decided to lend a hand,” she said.

Xoli Mahlangu, a Grade Six pupil of Inkatha Primary School, said she is very happy to receive such a gift, which will help her to focus in class and to look nice in her new uniform.

A Grade Eight pupil of Mabuya Secondary School, Kgotsofatso Inama, said the uniform he received will improve his school performance.

Daveyton PR councillor Victor Chiloane applauded Moloto for the great work she has done for the pupils of Daveyton.

“Without the youth, we don’t have a bright future for our country,” he said.

“Thank you for your contribution.”

Pupils and elders of the old age home were also treated to lunch after the gifts were handed over.
