Maimane and Cachalia visit Barcelona
Residents of Barcelona and DA supporters welcomed DA leader Mmusi Maimane by singing and chanting struggle songs.
Maimane and DA mayoral candidate for Ekurhuleni, Ghaleb Cachalia, visited Barcelona, in Daveyton on Sunday, May 22.
The aim of the visit was to address issues of unemployment in Ekurhuleni.
Cachalia engaged with the residents and promised to bring change in the area.
Besides unemployment, residents also raised concerns about the shortage of sanitation, water and electricity in the region.
“As the DA we are here to bring services to the people and also create job opportunities,” he said.
“We have created more than 14 000 jobs in Cape Town and we can do the same for Ekurhuleni.”
Maimane sang and danced with the residents before giving his speech.
“Even today we can see that the people of Barcelona are suffering, I was here in 2014 and I don’t see any changes,” said Maimane.
“It’s not right for our people to be living like this; the government has forgotten our black people.”
Maimane said 8.9 million South Africans have no jobs and Ekurhuleni has the highest unemployment rate.
He said if the DA mayoral candidate takes over, the party will provide residents with job opportunities.
Maimane said he was not there to make promises but as the DA they have proven that they can deliver services for the people.
