Educating the youth on abuse

As part of Child Protection Week (May 29 to June 5) various organisations within the Benoni area addressed Grade Seven pupils from Kingsway Intermediate School about the importance of this week.

Various topics were covered by representatives from the Benoni SAPS, Benoni Fire and Emergency Services, iThemba Rape and Trauma Support Centre, the Benoni Community Policing Forum, EMPD, South African National Council of Alcoholism and Drugs Dependence and the Department of Health.

The children were taught about health and hygiene, and the importance of bathing daily and washing their hands after going to the toilet or before eating.

They were educated on physical, emotional and psychological abuse as well as bullying.

The youth were encouraged to report such incidents.

“I was bullied for seven years and I am able to stand in front of you today and encourage you to speak out if you being bullied,” said Guile de Carvalho, a CPF Sector Two representative who addressed the children.

With winter approaching, the children were also taught about the measures that need to be taken in order to avoid causing shack fires from spreading due to families cooking with paraffin stoves.

The children were asked to memorise important emergency numbers that they would need to call should they find themselves in situation where they need help urgently.

Some of the emergency numbers include:

Benoni Police Station: 011 747 0000

Childline: 0800 1111

Benoni Fire and Emergency Services: 10777
