Rynfield resident glad to be fighting crime
Kim Ferreira was born in Springs, but has lived in Benoni since she was six months old. The Rynfield resident is a housewife, but is kept busy monitoring crime alert groups as she volunteers with the Community Policing Forum (CPF).
BCT: What are some of your fondest memories of Benoni?
KF: I have countless fond memories from my childhood, such as my whole family driving through Benoni town at Christmas time admiring the beautiful Christmas lights, packing a picnic basket and the whole family going to the drive-in and visits to the Bunny Park with my children.
BCT: What makes Benoni unique to you?
KF: For me, Benoni is unique because it’s a tight-knit community and it feels like one big family. My family is all in Benoni and I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else.
BCT: Tell us more about being a member of the CPF.
KF: The CPF is made up of volunteers from the community who act as the eyes and ears for the SAPS, to assist them in fighting crime. I have been a member of the CPF for three years and have been extremely fortunate to meet some of the most incredible and selfless people. My contribution to the CPF entails administration and monitoring our Rynfield crime groups on WhatsApp and occasionally doing patrols in Sector One. We have over 1 200 members on the crime groups and I’m also on another 35 groups – so it keeps me pretty busy during the day. My work with the CPF is an important part of my life because I love being able to help our community.
BCT: You are 52 years old and are so involved in the community. Apart from your volunteer work, what hobbies do you have?
KF: My hobbies include reading, cross stitching, crochet and spending time with my family.
BCT: Tell us about your family and your life growing up.
KF: I am the middle child of five. My parents, Eddie and Dulcie Bowles, have been married for 61 wonderful years. My brother, Garnett Bowles, lives in Richards Bay and my sisters, Karen Serfontein, Diane Hennessy and Michele Wittstock, all live in Benoni. We are a very close family. I attended Tom Newby and Wordsworth High schools and matriculated in 1981. I have been married to Vivian Ferreira for 30 years. He was also born and bred in Benoni. We have three incredible children, Jay (28), Lisa (25) and Adam (13).
BCT: What are your plans with regards to your work and dreams?
KF: Continuing my participation in the Benoni CPF and I am looking forward to grandchildren in the future.
