Duo charged with kidnapping of UK immigrant
Two suspects have been arrested and appeared in court in connection with the kidnapping of UK immigrant David Ezekiel, whose burnt body was found in Apex recently.
The charred remains of a man were discovered in an open veld between Birmingham and Lancaster roads, in the early morning of February 17.
According to Col Stanley Nevhuhulwi, station commander of Actonville SAPS, a murder case was opened at Actonville Police Station, but the case was transferred to Yeoville Police Station, in Johannesburg, after the body was identified as Ezekiel, last week.
Yeoville SAPS spokesperson Capt Sifiso Mabizela said initially a missing person docket was opened with the station, but it was changed to a kidnapping case several days later.
At the time of publishing, Mabizela could not confirm why or when exactly the case was changed.
According to Brig Vishnu Naidoo, national SAPS spokesperson, Ezekiel was kidnapped from Linksfield Ridge, in Johannesburg.
Naidoo said Ezekiel had family in the UK, but couldn’t confirm his nationality.
“He was living here (South Africa) for more than three decades,” the spokesperson said.
“We have arrested two people, Antonio Krestwell, a 22-year-old male, and Bhavna Sunker, a 29-year-old female.
“They are currently facing charges of kidnapping, theft of motor vehicles, theft of tools and fraud.”
Naidoo said a case of murder is being investigated by police, but no such charges have been laid yet.
He added that the suspects appeared at the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on February 28.
The case was postponed until March 8.
Naidoo did not reveal how, when or by whom the body was identified.
