Legae celebrates a decade
Legae Community Childcare Centre (NGO) celebrated its 10th birthday at its Daveyton premises on April 1.
In 2006, a bearing company in Boksburg called SKF had a dream to establish a home for HIV/Aids orphans.
Jan Brons, the Managing Director of SKF, shared this at the time with his brother, Fred Brons, and this resulted in a partnership.
This dream became a reality when SKF, St Andrews and St Marks churches partnered.
However, it was decided that a daycare centre would be built instead of a home, because it would serve the community better.
It was also decided that the centre should not be limited to those affected by HIV/Aids, but include all vulnerable children and orphans.
Opening
The centre officially opened in April 2007 with the intention of making a difference in the lives of the children, community and staff.
Since their inception, Legae has taught children how to knit and to play chess, as well as providing computer and art lessons, and many more activities.
Christine Nel, who was involved in making the dream a reality 10 years ago, reminisced on the successes the school enjoyed over the years, and the struggles it faced.
“We had a little girl, Khanyi, who was tongue-tied; so, at the age of four, she still could not speak,” Nel said.
“However, through a source from America, she received the help she needed and underwent surgery.
“She moved to another school, but we have heard from relatives that she is doing much better.”
Past pupils of the school also spoke during the formal ceremony to thank the school and staff for their positive contribution to their future.
