Workers stand idle

Month-to-month contractors have been employed by the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) to clean Actonville and Wattville council-owned flats; however, they have no gear to do so.

In a previous article the City Times reported that the EMM will employ temporary contractors for three months from the beginning of August to clean basic refuse outside and on the corridors of the Actonville flats and the Actonville/Wattville Hostel.

“Today I finally allocated residents from the various flats to clean Delhi, Flora, Aloe, Lahore, Primrose and Azalea courts,” said Ward 29 councillor Haseena Ismail, on August 2.

Ismail complained on August 3 that the month-to-month contractors had neither cleaning detergents, brooms, spades, rakes nor clothes provided for them.

On Monday (August 7) Ismail told the City Times the month-to-month contractors had still not received any cleaning gear or detergents.

The EMM was asked for comment on August 3, but none had been received at the time of going to print.“Only 10 people were allowed to clean six flats according to the month-to-month contract,” said Ismail.

“They will work from 7am to 4pm, Monday to Friday.”

According to the councillor, residents have been cleaning the basic refuse outside and on the corridors of the flats they live in, since July 1, without being paid.

A Flora Court resident, who did not want to be named, confirmed this.

“This requires extra cleaning by the residents,” said the woman.

“I will be happy when the flats are cleaned because if it they are not cleaned, we may suffer a rodent infestation.”
