Robber found in possession of police pistol in Zesfontein

He just caught a lift to work.

One of three robbers, in possession of a police issue pistol, was arrested by members of the EMPD Bromberg Equestrian Unit on August 4 after an incident in Rooikat Street.

EMPD spokesperson Wilfred Kgasago explained that two members of the unit were on their way out to patrol at around 6am when, in Rooikat Street, Zesfontein, they sighted a suspicious-looking red Hyundai i20 reversing into a dark area.

“On approaching the vehicle to inspect what was going on, the rear passenger door suddenly opened and a man hastily got out and ran towards the metro police officers.”

Kgasago said the man was followed by another man who tried to grab him, apparently to try to put him back into the vehicle.

“The red Hyundai then sped off, leaving the two men behind.

“It was determined that the man who had first alighted from the car was a victim of a robbery and the man chasing him was one of three robbers.

“This after the victim explained that he was on his way to work and was given a lift in the Hyundai. The occupants held him up with a firearm and robbed him of his passport, R150 in cash and a power bank,” Kgasago explained.

“The man who was trying to get the victim back into the vehicle was found in possession of a police service pistol with its serial numbers still intact.

“The suspect (35) was arrested and detained at Crystal Park Police Station on a charge of possession of an unlicensed Berretta 9mm pistol and the victim opened a case of robbery.

“Investigations are underway to establish how a police issued pistol landed in the hands of the suspect,” Kgasago said.

The suspect was scheduled to appear in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court.
