SA has firm legislation in place to mitigate human trafficking – National Freedom Network

Legislation in place for human trafficking

With reference to the article “Trafficking is on our doorstep”, published on page 7 of last week’s City Times, Marina Reyneke, operations manager for the National Freedom Network, said it is not true that there is no legislation in place to deal with human trafficking directly.

Ekurhuleni metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe stated this during a recent press club event where human trafficking was brought under the spotlight.

“I urge you to correct this statement by sharing the website for South African Counter Human Trafficking Resources – ww.nfnresources.yolasite.com,” Reyneke said.

“The Prevention and Combating of Trafficking in Persons Act 7 of 2013, which became effective from August 9, 2015, is the legislation addressing human trafficking in South Africa.

“The website is highly-recommended reading and also has academic research and reports regarding human trafficking in South Africa.

“The first resources website on human trafficking specific to South Africa was launched in January 2015.

“We have uploaded links to current and older press releases, video clips, recommended books to read, movies to watch, academic research and reports with a focus on South Africa.

“There are also some learning links.”

What is the National Freedom Network (NFN)?

The NFN is the national network of role players across South Africa who are working against human trafficking.

It aims to empower, equip and encourage those in the field by being:

* A point of connection, for those interested in the issue and the work of combating human trafficking.

* A channel of communication between the role players (or network partners), between the provinces and between government and civil society

* A network of collaboration, as this is certainly not an issue that only one person or organisation can work against on their own.

The NFN assisted with the launch of the new South African National Human Trafficking Resource Line “HELP LINE” (SANHTRL) 0800 222 777.

The helpline is operated by A21 South Africa in close partnership with many stakeholders to ensure rapid response and effectiveness and operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Call specialists are trained professionals who follow international procedures ensuring the fastest response to each case.
