Ward 73 Clr Sinethemba Matiwane reported to the City Times that the gate to the entrance of the building had been fixed.
“With the gate being fixed it is now much safer for those living here instead of having to deal with a broken gate that cannot close itself,” said Matiwane.
“(Regarding the lifts) the Section 36 item was rejected by internal supply chain management.
“The department was advised to go out on tender for installation of lifts since the lifts material were secured and some lifts had arrived from abroad.
“The Human Settlements Department is currently busy with the Bid Evaluation Committee specifications and should serve at Bid Adjudication Committee in the next three to four weeks.
“I have also written to MMC Lesiba Mpya regarding the competency of the project manager. Some of the delays can be contributed to the fact that he does not have the experience to run such a project to refurbish 13 council-owned flats which service mostly the elderly.
“It is a hassle to use those stairs daily.
“(The) Benoni Human Settlements manager issued notices to tenants who are violating the rules with regards to their children staying with them in the flats.
“The vacant flats are currently being renovated; as soon as it is done they will be allocated to deserving applicants.”
