Successful fund-raiser for Benoni elderly

The entrance "fee" was a care hamper for an elderly person and at the end of the day the organisers were able to make up 114 hampers, which will be distributed to 57 elderly in need at facilities in Benoni, under the guidance of the Rynpark Association for the Aged.

Music lovers come out in numbers to support the Open Mic Compassion Campaign held in aid of Benoni elderly who are struggling to survive financially on a daily basis.

The music fund-raiser was held on May 11 at Night Owl Restaurant, Rynfield and organised by local musician and founder of Rynfield-based The Songwriters’ Attic Claudia Cox-Norton.

Claudia previously told the City Times that the idea was sparked by her recent interaction in a supermarket with a pensioner who didn’t have enough money to pay for the few basic grocery items she needed.

“This really touched me deeply and made me realise there are probably hundreds of pensioners in our city in the same situation,” said Claudia.

This made her determined to make a difference. She then decided to use her passion – music – to collaborate with other musicians and raise awareness about the aged who are struggling in Benoni.

Claudia said she hopes to have this event annually.

She said she was overwhelmed by the number of people who came to support the event.

“This really shows that Benoni cares about the elderly,” said Claudia.

During the event there was a special performance by Claudia’s nine students who performed a song about peace and love.

She thanked the musicians who participated, attendees who supported the event and Night Owl Restaurant for providing the venue.

The care hampers will be distributed to the elderly most in need with the guidance of the Rynpark Association for the Aged.
