Celebrating International Family Day

Mister Bean from Recycle Paper ZA came to give the children a surprise visit and encouraged them to recycle.

The Family and Marriage of South Africa joined Home-Start, a non-profit organisation (NPO) in Benoni to celebrate the United Nations International Family Day in Western Extension on May 15.

Families came out to enjoy some fun in the sun and paint on recyclable materials. One-year-old Destiny Lotkin grabbed the opportunity to get covered up in paint with both hands and made sure she got some paint on her clothes too.

Following the theme of the day looking after our environment, Msizi Nyembe from Recycle Paper ZA informed residents about the benefits of recycling and how they can make a profit by taking their plastic bottles to a buy-back centre which gives rands per kilogram and even encouraged them to support the people coming to look for plastic bottles on collection day by keeping the bottles aside for them, which could save them a lot of time digging in the bins.

He also highlighted that landfill sites in South Africa is a capital intensive problem and by recycling we can reduce the amount of waste in those sites.

“We also need to practice our constitutional right to a clean and healthy environment by becoming greener citizens,” he said

Various speakers came out to speak to the families and everyone was given a nice meal to end the celebrations.
