Women’s rugby on the rise at Northerns

The sport is growing well among the women.

Benoni Northerns Rugby Club’s (BNRC) women’s rugby section is growing at a rapid rate and the inclusion of some of their players in a recently selected Valke women’s side is testament to their increasing growth.

BNRC women players put their hands up at the Ekurhuleni Zimbali Rugby Festival, played in Germiston, over the weekend and earned their place in the provincial setup.

The Benonians enjoyed a 32-17 victory over the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) on May 18.

“We have shown so much improvement from the first game we played to the most recent game,” said Jaco Havenga, BNRC’s women’s coach.

“I am proud of my girls.”

Helena Yssel, Stompi Lowane, Rooies van Rooyen, Simone Smit and Lettie Nkosi were all picked for the Valke women’s side while Maria Ntobo, Amanda Beytell, Zettie Janse van Rensburg and Sous van den Berg will join the Valke training group.

Van den Berg will form part of the Valke’s coaching team as team manager.

Havenga said the club is always in search of women to join them and encouraged interested players to join them.

• Meanwhile, the club’s men’s teams enjoyed a successful weekend on the road.

The BNRC first, second and u-21 sides all tasted victory in the Valke Rugby Union’s Merlin League on May 18.

The first XV were excellent in their encounter with Meyerton and buried the disappointment of defeat against Nigel the week before with a 57-35 victory.

It is their third win out of four matches played in the Merlin League.

The second XV edged out their hosts by 14-12, while the u-21s convincingly beat Meyerton 57-35.

They will hope to keep the winning ways going when they play Sasolburg away from home on May 25.
