Brazier smoke kills child in Benoni AH

An inquest docket was opened at the Crystal Park Police Station.

A one-year-old child was found dead, and her mother unconscious, after inhaling smoke from a brazier on June 7 at a caravan on Hazel Road, Benoni AH.

Crystal Park SAPS spokesperson Const Alex Mokete said police were called to the scene, and upon the arrival of the paramedics, the child was declared dead.

“According to the father, he left his child and wife at their caravan around 7.30pm. When he returned at around 10pm, he found them unconscious,” said Mokete.

The mother was taken to a local hospital.

An inquest docket was opened at the Crystal Park Police Station.

The spokesperson said the brazier releases toxic fumes and families must avoid putting it inside the house immediately after burning it.

Mokete warned families to refrain from keeping the brazier in the house when they retire to bed to sleep.
