Palliative care course success for community members
Participants underwent training twice a week for just over two months.
A graduation ceremony for about 70 students was held at the Northfield Methodist Church after completing their Hospice palliative care course supported by the US President’s Emergency Plan for Aids Relief (PEPFAR) through the community grants programme.
The estimated cost of the course for all the students was just over R400 000.
“This is a wonderful occasion because sadly, due to the lack of funding, many hospices face closing down,” said outreach administrator of the John Wesley Community Centre, Courtney Klinkert.

“The funding provided by PEPFAR has enabled John Wesley Community Centre to train the students.
“Many people in the community do not have a place to go to, and their family members have to look after them, and do not know how to manage illnesses such as TB, HIV and cancer.
“Now, people in the community have acquired skills to look after those affected by different illnesses.
“It has also assisted with job creation as those who are qualified can charge for their new set of skills.”
