Electrification project on course to light up Mayfield Extension in Daveyton.

Over 200 households from Ext Six will be the first to switch on their plugs when the metro connects them to the electricity grid in October.

Residents in Mayfield Extension, Daveyton, will have electricity in their houses by the end of this year as the electrification project is at an advance stage.

This was the report given to Ekurhuleni mayor Mzwandile Masina, and Member of the Mayoral Committee for Water, Sanitation and Energy Alderman Tiisetso Nketle, during their site visit to the Mayfield Extension Six and Ext 45 on September 14.

Work that has already been covered involves installation of transformers, cabling networks and installing of prepaid meters in both areas. The metro had set aside a budget of R30-million for this project.

Over 200 households from Ext Six will be the first to switch on their plugs when the metro connects them to the electricity grid in October.

Meanwhile, 600 residents of Mayfield Ext 45 will have to wait a little longer as they will be connected to the grid at the beginning of December.

Masina expressed his satisfaction on the work done so far with the electrification project.

“I have taken it upon myself to visit all projects across the metro to assess the state of service delivery in Ekurhuleni,” he said.

“I am happy with the current progress and the number of new substations that are almost complete.

“We continue to call upon communities to protect our facilities because it is unsustainable to continue replacing vandalised transformers and substations.”

Elizabeth Poko, a homeowner at Mayfield Ext Six, was delighted at the prospect that in just a few weeks she will have electricity in her house that she shares with her husband and their four children.

“We find ourselves breaking the law by connecting electricity illegally so that we can also use a fridge to store food.

I’m so relieved because it means we will also live better lives,” she said.
