From November 27 to 29 Benoni Flying Squad (BFS) officers arrested 16 suspects and recovered five motor vehicles in and around Benoni.
“On Friday, officers received a tip-off of a group of men hiding out at a Birch Acres Motel who were allegedly wanted for a hijacking in KwaZulu-Natal. Members followed up the information and in one motel room arrested all nine suspects,” said BFS spokesperson WO Grant Giblin.
“A large quantity of stolen bank cards was also confiscated.”
Giblin added that a suspect was arrested on the same day on the N17 highway, Boksburg, after crashing a hijacked green BMW he used in an attempt to get away from the officers.
“The incident originated in Springs, where the suspect allegedly committed domestic violence, malicious damage to property and then hijacked the BMW to escape the police. The vehicle was written off and the suspect was lucky to only have minor injuries,” Giblin explained.
Five suspects were also arrested around Brakpan, Kempton Park Taxi Rank and Quaqua Section, Thembisa, after allegedly being found with drugs.
“One was arrested on a Kempton Park housebreaking and theft case and two gold rings were recovered after he took the officers to the pawn shop where he had sold them,” he said.
In further policing, four motor vehicles were recovered after being abandoned:
• White Toyota Hino, corner Zuurfontein and Modderfontein, Kempton Park, reported hijacked on a Thembisa case
• White GWM bakkie, Barcelona informal settlement, Etwatwa, reported stolen on a Benoni case
• White Nissan Almera, Mphomalong, Thembisa, reported hijacked on a Rabie Ridge case
• Silver Volkswagen Polo, Ivory Park Extension Three reported hijacked on a Thembisa case
