Waste removal backlog due to lack of working trucks

The metro says the problem is "regrettable" and receiving urgent attention

In response to many residents of Benoni experiencing frustration with the metro not emptying wheelie bins as per the schedule over the past few weeks, metro spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said the problem is a lack of vehicles at their depots due to mechanical breakdowns.

“The service providers assisting with additional capacity – on an as-and-when required basis – have not been able to supply sufficient vehicles to cover the shortfall of vehicles.

“We are running below capacity and have not been able to collect refuse as per the collection schedule for the past two weeks,” he said.

“All our collection areas are currently experiencing backlogs of up to five days per area.

“We are in the process of fixing the problems and anticipate services will be restored to normal within two weeks.”
