Local business rolls up sleeves to keep Chris Rencken Park clean

The business appeals to other businesses in the Benoni to assist in the clean-up.

Staff members of a Benoni-based company, Wagi and Tau, recently rolled up their sleeves to keep Chris Rencken Park on Divot Street clean.

The clean-up initiative started on July 26 to August 2. Mark Langkilde, from the company, said as Benoni residents they have personally seen the sad state of the park leading from the Lakes Hotel to Bunyan Street onto the N12 highway.

“As part of the community that travels these roads and that have friends that live in the area, it was something that we as a company thought that we can assist with and try to improve,” said Langkilde.

“We cleaned up both the park and the area by the railroad and picked up an enormous amount of litter.”

Langkilde said parks are a public treasure and he felt that is the responsibility of every member of the community to ensure that it stays this way and it is something that we can all enjoy.

“Unfortunately, there are members of the community that uses the parks to enjoy the beauty of the space but leaves behind all of their trash for someone else to sort out.

“We as a team ask that all members of the public using the park to tidy up after themselves and if the is litter in the park please assist in keeping the area clean and beautiful,” he said. He said seven wonderful staff members contributed to the clean-up operation and worked hard to remove a lot of litter from the parks. “We were astounded by the amount of plastic, paper and glass that we removed.

“Despite our best efforts during the week leading up to weekend, by the time we had returned to the park the following Monday the park was in a sad state due to the weekend-users. They left behind a huge amount of glass and fast food packaging,” said Langkilde.

“There is a total absence of dustbins in the park and we feel that this is a factor in the amount of trash left scattered. We implore the council or other business to come up with solutions to this problem as if there are no bins the problem will continue.” The business appeals to other businesses in the Benoni to assist in the clean-up.

“We are a small company, but during our clean-up operation felt an immense sense of pride in what we achieved. If every business and community member could do their part we could have parks that we are proud of in the city. We ask the public to do their bit.”

Their next clean-up will be held towards the end of August. Anyone interested in joining them can visit www.tauenergydrink.com, under events, or visit their social media pages: Instagram, Facebook or Twitter, or info@tauenergydrink.com
