To be the first South African finalist at the World Pipe Band Championships is the end goal for teenager Sebastian Potgieter, as he retained the title of the South African Junior and Open champion.
The Benoni High School Grade 12 learner competed in the South African Solo Drumming Championships in October and is one step closer to turning his goal into a reality, as he took first place in the following categories: Open A Overall, Open A March, Strathspey and Reel, as well as Open A Hornpipe and Jig.
Potgieter said he started drumming as a hobby when he was in Grade Seven and two years after that, he knew he wanted to compete.
“It became my dream to win,” he said.
As he deals with the pressure of writing his exams and practising for the championships, he said it feels fantastic to keep his title.
While he is not sure about what he will be doing after matric, he is sure he will continue competing in the South African Solo Drumming Championships and eventually compete in the world championships.
