MMC for Community Services Charlotte Zitha handed over 150 pairs of school shoes made from recycled plastic to learners from Kwa-Thema and Tsakani on February 22.
She explained the shoes are a product of a local pharmaceutical company.
“The shoes are made from plastic used for drips and masks. Not only has the donation restored the dignity of the learners, but it has also boosted their confidence,” said Zitha.
Kenneth Masekela Secondary School in Kwa-Thema received 100 pairs and Thuthukanisizwe Primary School in Tsakani 50 pairs.
“One also hopes it inspires their creativity to also think out of the box and invent something even greater for the good of fellow humans and the environment,” said Zitha.
Kenneth Masekela Secondary principal Jabulani Fakude made it clear the donation was needed, as most of the learners were from humble backgrounds.
He encouraged other companies and good Samaritans to consider making such donations to schools for the greater benefit of learners in our townships.
