Father convicted of raping his daughters

She drank poison to bring an end to the continuous abuse

A 49-year-old man was sentenced to two life sentences on two counts of rape, as well as 10 years of imprisonment for sexual assault, in the Benoni Regional Court on March 18.

According to Capt Nomsa Sekele, spokesperson for the Benoni Police Station, the case was handed over to the Benoni Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit’s (FCS) Det-Sgt Emily Mahlangu in 2017 when one of the accused’s daughters (15) was admitted to the Far East Rand Hospital after consuming rat poison.

“The victim took the rat poison after her father again raped her in their family home in Maphupheni, Etwatwa,” she said.

“After being admitted and treated, the youth confessed to the continuous abuse and gave a full statement to the police.

“Investigations revealed that he regularly sexually assaulted and raped both his daughters.”

He was also found unfit to possess a firearm.
The sentences will be served concurrently.

In a separate case, Sofiso Masango (18) was found guilty of one count of rape and another of armed robbery.

On March 16, the accused was sentenced to 30 years’ imprisonment.

According to the investigation led by Det-Sgt Edwin Moraba of FCS, on October 4, 2020, the accused followed the 22-year-old victim home after she left a local tavern.

He pushed her to the ground and held her at knifepoint, where he raped her. He fled the scene with her cellphone.

“The victim was able to describe the assailant to a passing driver,” said Sekele.

“Masango was known to the driver and was arrested.”
