Beloved mother, friend and active member of the St Dunstan’s parish Anne van der Spuy died on May 23 at the age of 88.
Van der Spuy spent her final 18 months at the Arbor Village Care Home, in Bedfordview, after moving from Lakeview where she and her late husband, Topper, raised their five children.
Anne grew up in KwaZulu-Natal but spent her schooling years at the St Anne’s Boarding School, during WW2.
She had travelled the world and was fluent in five languages, a skill which landed her a job as a translator in Italy.
In 1958, she married SAA airline pilot Topper and the couple moved to Benoni.
A vehement supporter of the proverbial underdog and vulnerable, Anne became an active member of St Dunstan’s, volunteering her time at the parish, diligently attending weekly prayer meetings and offering her services catering for church activities.
In her free time, the accomplished pianist could be found tickling the ivories, and she was passionate about classical ballet and music.
“Our mother was an avid reader and had a wide range of interests ranging from geography and history to the arts and sport,” said Catherine Stefanutti, Anne’s daughter.
“She was a fierce supporter of the Sharks rugby team and also supported Ferrari F1 with passion.”
She is described as someone who was fun-loving with a sharp wit and sense of humour.
When not involved at church, Anne supported many animal protection organisations.
“She had a kindness and generosity of spirit that touched so many people,” said Catherine.
“To us, she was a mommy; the most loving and devoted any child could ask for.
“She was our protector, advisor and rock, always kind and gentle, graceful and dignified.”
Anne is survived by her children Irene Werner, Catherine Stefanutti, Christine van der Spuy, Andrew van der Spuy and Nibs van der Spuy, and five grandchildren.
A memorial service in her memory was held on June 2 at the St Dunstan’s Cathedral.
