Horticultural society gets a new name

The historical society now has a ‘new set of sheers’

Established in the 1950s, the Benoni Horticultural Society is being revived and the current committee hopes to inspire young gardening enthusiasts by modernising the club.

Meeting for only the second time since the onset of Covid-19, a member of the club, now known as the Benoni Gardening Club (BGC), Jay Kunvar said that long-standing members deemed it necessary to revive and rename the club to boost membership thus, ensuring its ongoing activities.

Boasting with 30 active members BGC is set to tackle new and topical matters such as growing sustainable food gardens as well as gardening for micro-living spaces.

Meeting at Lavender Pots Nursery in Rynfield, the club hosted Jandré le Roux as well as Shenaaz Ballim from Home Growers to learn about the healing powers of mushrooms as well as the benefits fungi has for your garden.

BGC meets on the third Saturday of the month.
