Sentencing of man who robbed learners postponed

Sentencing is scheduled for August 15

The sentencing of Rowan Naidoo (33) of Lakefield in the Benoni Regional Court on July 29 was postponed, pending the submission of a social worker’s report.

Naidoo was found guilty on five counts of robbery with aggravated circumstances and one of attempting to defeat the ends of justice on May 20 by Magistrate Ian Cox.

According to Captain Nomsa Sekele, spokesman for the Benoni SAPS, for four months Naidoo targeted children from nearby schools holding them at gunpoint while robbing them of their phones.

“Victims of his crimes, aged between 13 and 18, were able to supply the police with a detailed description of the suspect, which led to his arrest at a popular gambling venue on the corner of Russel and Howard Streets, in Western Extension, on March 29, last year,” she said.

“Following his arrest, a toy gun presumably used during the crimes was found hidden in his silver VW Polo’s engine air filter.”

Sentencing is scheduled to take place on August 15.
