A huge fire left residents of Elethu Cheshire Home in Daveyton with no place to sleep on the morning of July 25.
According to the manager at the home, Sandile Mafu, the fire started in one of the resident’s rooms.
“The fire has left nine residents without a place to sleep and no clothes to wear. Their belongings such as the heaters, fridges, manual wheelchairs, beds, identity documents and SASSA documents were destroyed during the fire.”
Mafu said community members helped to rescue residents out of the house.
“Without the community and firefighters’ help, most of the residents would’ve sustained injuries. We are appealing for public assistance in recovering what has been lost in the fire. Any donation is welcomed,” said Mafu.
The Department of Emergency Services spokesperson William Ntladi said there is still a need for an assessment to determine the extent of damage and risks that the residents may be pre-disposed to.
“A total of 20 blankets and nine mattresses were distributed on July 27 as immediate relief,” said Ntladi. The cause of the fire is still unknown and investigations are underway.
