Local beauty plant trees at Sandpan

Local beauty and community band together to plant trees in celebration of Arbor Month.

Former Miss Benoni and Miss Earth SA contestant, Victoria Welthagen, spent the day along the banks of the Sandpan, in Countryview, beautifying the park.

Armed with shovels and green thumbs, the group consisting of members of the community as well as learners from St Dunstan’s College and Hoërskool Brandwag recently cleaned up the park and planted indigenous trees.

“I wanted to give back to my community in celebration of Arbor Month. Our planet is precious and we must protect it,” said Welthagen.

“We started this project by cleaning up the park, removing dry branches and distributing it to those who can use it as firewood.”

Learners from Hoërskool Brandwag who supported the project with Victoria Welthagen are Dalein van Heerden, Surinda Human, Reid du Plessis, Charl van Zyl and Ruan Joubert.

With the help of the eager learners, we dug holes for the trees and the ground was prepared for the eventual tree planting.

“I am grateful to everyone that not only supported this project but who physically got stuck in to get it done,” she said.

Young tree planters from St Dunstan’s College are Declan Ludick and Reagan Ludick with Victoria Welthgen.
