Scimitars’ Spies lights up league

Benoni Scimitars batsman Breaan Spies scored the East Rand Veterans’ League’s first-ever century when the Scimitars beat Kempton Park CC Rebels by 10 runs in round four on September 10 at CBC Boksburg.

Spies scored an unbeaten 100 off 81 balls before leaving the field injured. His knock included 13 boundaries and one maximum. The opener was also effective with the ball, returning with figures of 2/30 from four overs.

Gavin Ferreira (76 off 42) and Jan Grobbelaar (36 off 20) assisted him as the Scimitars reached 262/5 in their 30 overs.

Arno Weyers was the Rebels’ peak of the bowlers with three wickets, while Shawn van Niekerk and Don Mackay grabbed one wicket each.

Despite half-centuries from Dirk Fourie (68 off 47) and Brett Luck (36 off 20), the Rebels fell 10 runs off the target as they were all dismissed for 252.

Zano Mnguni of The Scimitars was lethal with the ball, grabbing three wickets, while Spies and Alwyn Labuschagne ended with two scalps apiece.

After round four, the Kempton Park Renegades (three wins and one loss) lead the log with 27 points. Benoni Sabres are second with 25 points, while Bedfordview Polys are in third place.

Springs Old Boys, winless after four matches, are in the basement and Alberton Old Boys, also winless, are second from last with 12 points.

In round three on September 3, the Rebels’ Vaugn van Berkel (5/23) and Polys’ Johan van Rooyen (5/15) took the league’s first five-wicket haul.
