Good successes for BFS again

Flying squad members have intensified their operations.

Building up to the festive season, members of the Benoni Flying Squad (BFS) have ramped up operations, leading to the arrest of four people. From November 15 to 19, officers further recovered four vehicles and a firearm.

Possession of drugs
On November 15 a man was arrested in Umthambeka Section, Thembisa. He was found in possession of heroin and meth.

Reckless and negligent driving
The driver of a Nissan Micra was arrested at 22:15 on November 15, after it was found that he was driving under the influence of alcohol.

“While conducting routine operations along the N12 highway, officers noticed the vehicle speeding from the Kingsway off-ramp, turning onto Springs Road,” said Warrant Officer Grant Giblin, BFS spokesperson.

“After skipping several red traffic lights, the unit was able to bring the vehicle to a stop. The driver was found with an open bottle of beer.”

Stolen vehicle
A red Nissan 1400 bakkie was recovered in Annabella Road, Bartlett, on November 18.

According to Giblin, community cameras monitored by local security companies were triggered prompting security personnel to track its movement.

“BFS officers responded to the call and at 16:30 the vehicle was pulled over,” he said.

“It was confirmed that the vehicle had been stolen in Benoni and the two occupants were arrested on the scene.

The occupants of the stolen Nissan bakkie were found in possession of various electrical items, which were stolen from a shop in Kempton Park.

Following a search of the vehicle various electronic items were found, which according to information were stolen from a store in Kempton Park.”

Firearm recovered
A man carrying an unlicensed 9mm Taurus pistol, with its serial number filed off, evaded arrest on November 19.

“The suspect was seen walking on the N12, near Calabashe informal settlement, carrying a black plastic bag,” said Giblin.

“As the patrolling unit approached, the man dropped the bag and ran, disappearing among the shacks.”

Retrieving the bag, officers found the pistol and eight live rounds of ammunition.
