EGBA wins Melvill Cup

The EGBA players also won several medals in the individual events.

The Eastern Gauteng Badminton Association (EGBA) senior team was crowned the inter-provincials champions during the SA Open Championships at John Barrable Hall from October 31 to November 4.

The team, comprising Amy Ackerman and Deidrè Jordaan, including 14-year-old Ricardo Vigario, defeated provinces like Western Province to walk away with the Melvill Cup trophy.

In the individual events, Robert White was crowned the men’s singles champion after beating EGBA teammate Jarred Elliott 21-16, 21-12 in the final to walk away with the gold medal.

The women’s singles was won by Johanita Scholtz from the Free State, who beat Carolien Moll 21-6, 21-6 to walk away with the national title.

In the women’s doubles, EGBA’s Jordaan and Ackerman grabbed a silver medal after losing the final 21-11, 11-21, 21-16 to Scholtz and Megan de Beer.

The Dednam siblings, Chris and Roelof, won their second successive men’s doubles title after beating Cameron Coetzer and White in the final.

Elliott and Ackerman won the mixed doubles gold after beating their EGBA teammates White and Jordaan 21-14, 18-21, 21-8 in the final.

The EGBA secretary Vicky Fenny said the organisation was proud of the players.
