UPDATE: Family murder: Father in court

The Pomona businessman will appear in court again on February 2 for bail application.

Pomona businessman Anton Bouwer (56) appeared in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court yesterday (January 25) on four charges of murder, attempted murder and a charge of defeating the ends of justice.

The matter was postponed to February 2 when Bouwer will reappear for a formal bail application.

Bouwer was arrested on January 22 after he allegedly went on a shooting spree, killing his parents Robert (78) and Bettie (73) at their Bredell home.

He also shot and killed his stepdaughter Natasha (22) and domestic worker Elizabeth Gozwana (56) at a home in Fairleads, Benoni.

Crystal Park Police were on the scene in Fairleads.

His wife, Adélle (43), was also shot but airlifted to hospital and is still reportedly in a critical condition.

Bouwer turned the gun on himself at the Fairleads home but survived and was hospitalised.

On the day of the shootings, SAPS provincial spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo said Bouwer’s parents arrived at their home in Bredell at about 11:30 and found their son on the property.

It is alleged he fatally shot his parents. The suspect then arrived at a home in Fairleads just after midday, where he carried out the other shootings before attempting to kill himself.

The Benoni City Times made contact with Bouwer’s nephew, Brendan Bouwer. He, however, declined to comment, explaining that the police had instructed the family not to speak to the media.

Attempts to reach Bouwer’s son, Barry, went unanswered.
