Benoni’s South African Red Cross Society celebrates World Red Cross Day

The special celebration was held under the theme "Keeping Humanity Alive".

Dressed in red T-shirts bearing the Red Cross emblem, members of the South African Red Cross Society (Benoni branch) and learners of the Red Cross Nursery School commemorated World Red Cross Day on May 8.

The commemoration was held at the organisation’s Rynfield premises in honour of the humanitarian work and principles of the International Red Cross.

This year’s theme, ‘Keeping Humanity Alive’, is aimed at reaffirming the society’s commitment to humanitarian service and to salute the efforts of volunteers who make a difference daily.

Holding candles in remembrance of volunteers who succumbed to injuries while on duty are staff members of Red Cross Nursery School, Elinah Sibisi, Elize Strauss, Phachane Tabola, Nelisiwe Mlangeni and Gugulethu Mtsweni.
Speaking to the children about the history of the South African Red Cross Society is Phachane Tabola with Red Cross Nursery School principal, Elize Strauss.

According to the Benoni branch manager, Phachane Tabola, the day also served to honour Henry Dunant, the pioneering volunteer who founded the organisation.

“May his spirit live on as we continue to uphold his vision and mission,” said Tabola.

Candles were lit in remembrance of volunteers who succumbed to injuries while on duty.
