Homestead Helpers clean up Western Ext tennis court

“We were adamant that Benoni Bowling Club would not be embarrassed by the view from their dining room and that they should be proud hosts of this prestigious event.”

The Homestead Helpers for Benoni expressed immense pride after cleaning up the Walmsley Park tennis courts in Western Extension.

The organisation said this latest clean-up of another facility in the area was motivated by the fact that the Benoni Central Bowling Club is hosting the International Bowls for the Disabled (IBD) Championships.

According to the Helpers’ Jacqui Keel, the facility was an eyesore and would have portrayed Benoni negatively to the different countries taking part in the IBD tournament.

“What a heavy heart it was when entering this tennis court. It’s a former buzzing playground for adults and children alike. It’s an international highlight for Benoni because it has hosted tennis stars like eight-time men’s majors winner Jimmy Connors,” said Keel.

Keel and members of the organisation rolled up their sleeves and cut the grass that had overgrown inside the tennis courts. They also removed the reeds that have grown along the facility’s fence.

“With sheer hard work, determination and a vision for a brighter future for Benoni at large, we accomplished what we set out to do and once again inspired hope into the hearts of the Benoni citizens.”

This is the third clean-up initiative the organisation has been involved in. This is after tidying up the Benoni Central swimming pool earlier this year and cutting the overgrown grass on the football field opposite the Sun 1 hotel.
