Women enjoy cups of hope

Proceeds of the event were in aid of CANSA.

For the first time since 2017, Tanja Spencer, owner of Face Facts in Boksburg, and Dr Angela Murphy, specialist physician at Netcare Sunward Park Hospital, hosted their popular Cuppa for Cansa high tea.

Dressed in soft pastel hues, 160 women converged at Pinnacle College Rynfield on September 7 to enjoy a morning of inspirational talks, entertainment, and the company of like-minded women while offering support to those in the throes of battling cancer and to celebrate those who have overcome.

Spencer explained that she and Murphy joined hands in 2007 to host their first Cuppa event.

“Our initial high tea was held in honour of a mutual friend who was battling the disease,” she said.

Nicole Manga (18) and Jody Reynolds attended their first Cuppa for Cansa at Pinnacle College Rynfield.

“It became an annual institution which we hosted at various venues. Sadly our friend lost her battle in 2011.”

Murphy said that with the rebirth of their annual event, they hope to encourage women to undergo regular health screenings.

Guest speaker Jane Trembath, a Lakefield resident and chairperson of Korsman Conservancy, with Van Ryn Rotary Ann Gill Davey.

“Self-tests and listening to your body is vital to ensure early diagnosis,” said Murphy.

“It is never too early to start and I hope that mothers, grannies and aunties in attendance will encourage the younger women, who are part of their circles to follow a healthy lifestyle.”
